Updated: Jun 23, 2019

BACKGROUND

Pietra Dura or also known as Parchinkari during Mughal India, is an ancient art technique of carving and inlaying semiprecious stones onto marble, often in geometric or floral patterns. The art evolved in India by Mughal craftsmen who were commissioned for the magnificent Taj Mahal during the 17th century, which is still world-renowned finest example of this splendid art form. It has been passed down to generations, as its still practiced in the city of Taj Mahal - Agra and it requires great skills and high precision to create a piece of Parchinkari.
